Insurance does not cover marriage counseling services. Marriage counseling is designed to focus on the relationship between spouses, not on a clinical mental health diagnosis. Essentially, the “marriage” is the client. Insurances require that a specific code for a billable mental health diagnosis be given to an individual, and a troubled marriage cannot be given a mental health diagnosis. Other diagnostic codes specific to relationship problems called “V Codes,” are also not reimbursed by insurance.

Life Resources’ therapists employ the most scientifically advanced methods for working with distressed couples, the primary model for our work is through Emotionally Focused Therapy, or “EFT.” This model is known for its’ non-pathologizing approach to working with distressed relationships. This means that EFT therapists recognize that the feelings and behaviors exhibited by couples in distress are understandable and usually do not warrant a clinical diagnosis.

Clients may have had previous counselors file for insurance reimbursement for marriage counseling through one of the partners, which required one party to be given a mental health diagnosis. In an effort to remain compliant with the standards of EFT therapy and insurance company guidelines, Life Resources does not file insurance for marriage services. Therapeutic services are charged at the published rate for each therapist based on their training and qualifications.

We recognize that marriage therapy is an investment of time and money that requires a high level of commitment on everyone’s part. Couples needing financial help are encouraged to apply for scholarship assistance, even if they do not fully meet all of the published guidelines. Discounts may be available, so please speak with your therapist or the front office about how we can all work together toward for your wellbeing.
